The Lego® Sandwich PlatformThe Lego®-sandwich microfluidic platform is an inexpensive method to produce microfluidic devices without the use of adhesives or laborious fabrication techniques. To make a Lego®-sandwich assembly, optically transparent acrylic sheets are etched with a CO2 laser machine to create microfluidic features and to cut alignment holes. The shape of the acrylic layer is specially designed to fit onto the Lego® plate which forces the feature-containing acrylic layer against a thin PDMS layer on the Lego® plate. This PDMS layer and interference fit of the acrylic layer is designed to provide sufficient sealing that contains the fluids being investigated. With the design of the channels made ahead of time, fabrication time for the initial design was less than ten minutes.
